Schuster didn’t open up FUBAR’s modified engine on the flight to Rome, though there was nothing else in the world he would have rather done. He knew he had only begun to touch on the ship’s new capabilities, but flying a lot faster than the ships around you was an excellent way to get noticed, and that was the last thing they wanted.

So he kept their speed right around Mach 1.5, which put them over New York state just over two hours later, headed for the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Bishop and Ellie had spent most of the flight to that point cuddling and talking low, while the others talked about their time on Oberon One.

Suddenly Gloom appeared at Schuster’s side and hunkered down next to his seat at the flight console. He felt a tiny tug in his chest when she ran a delicate hand through her hair and bent over him to see the readouts.

“It’s boring back there,” she sighed. “What’s happening up here?”

“Uh, just flying,” he said.

Hot blood rushed into his cheeks. Smooth, buddy.

“These numbers are wrong,” she said, pointing to the display. “They can’t be that low. We should get that fixed before we get out over the Atlantic. Good thing I caught it before we hit New York.”

“They’re fine.”

She looked him in the eye. “They’re not fine, they’re impossible.”

“Nothing’s impossible on FUBAR,” he said with a grin, quickly followed by an embarrassed frown. “Well, technically, yes, I guess a lot of things are impossible on FUBAR, but those numbers are right.”

“The ratio is way off.” He could hear aggravation in her voice now.

“Don’t worry about it.”

“You can’t have that kind of output with that little expenditure! We’re going to run out of fuel before we even make it to the Azores. We’ll have to land at one of the floating resorts, and that means being asked questions we don’t want to answer.”

Schuster sighed. “Look, I flew this tub from Uranus to Earth, I think I know how to fly her across the Atlantic.”

“Yeah, and if you don’t, we all die because of it.”

There was something in the woman’s eyes that was making him angry and aroused at the same time. He didn’t know whether he should give in to either feeling.

“The engines have been modified,” he said slowly. “I told you that.”

“Modified how?”

“I don’t know, exactly. I wasn’t able to see the whole process, and… well, frankly, I never went to school.”

She gave him a smug grin. “Neither did I, and I’m younger than you, but I still saved your Marine asses last night with my tech.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve been a little busy fighting for my life in an outer space prison the last couple years,” he said, more aggressively than he’d meant to. “Not to mention the five years spent fighting a war around the world before that.”

Gloom’s smile widened, which both delighted and baffled him.

“All right, then.” She nodded. “There’s the guy I was looking for. I’m glad to see he was in there.”

Schuster blinked, baffled.
