Cologne, GERMANY

At Cologne we set up tents at a camping ground, and had a quiet night to be ready for an early start to Munich next day and a visit to the famous beer festival, Oktoberfest. We arrived there in the early afternoon, and once again set up camp at a camping ground on the outskirts of the city. This one was situated by a river which was part of the camp, a pretty good set up with a large raft on the river which had a jazz band on board to entertain the campers for the afternoon and evening. There was no need to go anywhere else with all there was to do at the camp. Although we were all OK with each other there were nonetheless smaller clusters of like-minded people forming within the group. I, myself, had become pretty friendly with a young farmer bloke on his way to Australia for the first time and a girl who was a school teacher on a holiday to India.

The next day we drove into the city, parked the bus and set about doing some sightseeing before meeting at the bus again to make our way to the festival. Parking the bus was no mean feat either with the number of other vehicles trying for the same outcome. It was managed, however, in a spot very close to the festival site. There was plenty of activity around the city with the beer festival being the theme on show of course. One sight to remember was a dray wagon being hauled by two huge horses, with the largest beer barrels imaginable on board. The two guys handling it were dressed in traditional Bavarian clothing and waving to all as they passed by, no doubt on the way to supplying the huge beer halls at the site of the festival.

We spent the afternoon sampling the beers in their huge glasses at the festival. The easiest way to handle these was to pick the glass up using the back of the hand to support the weight through the handle. The waitresses were pretty good at getting the beers to the tables carrying at least three in each hand by the handles, must be quite a knack to that. Very strong these German girls must be. The beer halls were also huge, with hundreds of people in each of them that we visited. After starting out at just after 12 o’clock here I was pleasantly sozzled by mid-afternoon and decided that discretion was the better part of valour and so cut down on my consumption of the amber liquid. We were by now full of chatter after a very enjoyable afternoon. We wandered around the site before we left for the drive back to the camping ground. We left Munich the next day heading for Austria where the main stopping point was to be at Salzburg. It turned out that we did have an overnight stay en route.
