We kept going. At the Kizu River, a ‘cycle route’ headed off left into the darkness following the left bank of the river, while Route 24 crossed it on a bridge. The ‘cycle route’ along the stopbank looked the most likely to produce a place to sleep. We headed left. But it was too dark. It was after 2am and even the road was hard to follow, despite the starry night. We started to despair. The ‘cycle route’ suddenly crossed a side river on a bridge that was blocked off to cars. There were metal obstructions at either end to prevent vehicles from using it. I got the idea halfway across.

“I’ve got it! Let’s sleep on the bridge!”

“On the bridge?”

“Sure. It’s great. Look, cars can’t come over, there’s a pleasant breeze and there’ll be no bugs! I heard that Kōbōdaishi once slept under a bridge when he had no place to stay. Why can’t we sleep on top of a bridge? It’s not going to rain. It’s perfect!”

“I’m on,” said Bashō, enthusiastically. “I’ve slept in a lot of weird places, but never on a bridge!”

“Neither have I. Who could possibly get upset at us for sleeping on a bridge?”

We went to sleep while being serenaded by frogs.
