The sound startled him, and Detective Billy Dixon reached for his phone reflexively. He had it in his hand before he realized it was his alarm going off and not a phone call. He glanced at the screen. SHITHEAD SEARCH was the name of the alarm.

He shut off the alarm and rubbed his eyes, then checked his watch, even though the alarm went off at 3 p.m. every Thursday. Then he sighed. He was in the office, and not in the middle of something, so he didn’t have an excuse, and he hadn’t had time the week before…but this routine was getting a bit old. How long had he been doing it, almost a year? Still, it had been a month or more since he’d talked to Anderson’s stripper ex-girlfriend and his trailer trash ex-partner, shaken that tree. Maybe something had finally come loose.

He wiggled his mouse to wake up his computer, and then first did a simple internet search—Dave David Anderson Michigan Arizona. If only the kid had a less common name…

It took him half an hour to look through the first ten pages of Google results, but he didn’t find anything new linking back to his vanished shithead. That done, he went to AR15.com, which he’d learned was one of if not the largest gun-related forum on the internet. While it was named after one specific rifle, the website and the accompanying forums discussed just about everything that pertained to firearms. The “locals”, as they were, called it “Arfcom”, and as he clicked in he saw that there currently were just under ten thousand people on the site. At least ninety percent of them crazy or dangerous, near as he could tell, but that description seemed to fit Anderson to a T.

He perused various forums, just checking the subject lines of the threads as there were far too many threads to read every single reply. Heck, the “AR Discussions” forums alone contained 2.4 million replies to posts stretching back years. He was only interested in newer posts, luckily, but still it took him close to an hour just to skim the headlines of the site forums. He found nothing that mentioned David Anderson either directly or otherwise.

Dixon had spent so much time investigating him over the years that he knew as much about Anderson as any other suspect he’d ever investigated, even though Anderson had never so much as sat down for an interview with him. Anderson had been a competitive shooter, and a member of the United States Practical Shooting Association. Dixon went to the members area of the USPSA website and after signing in (he’d long ago bought a membership specifically for this reason) checked through the classifieds and what little other info there was there. No luck.

After a bathroom break and a quick check of his watch, Dixon sat back down at his computer and visited the final stop of his weekly (more or less) online David Anderson search, the Brian Enos forums. Near as
