CHAPTER NINE
Wednesday Afternoon
Cecily was coming in with the groceries when Mark and Reggie came down the stairs.
âAs soon as I put these things away, Iâll serve lunch. I have a cream of mushroom soup and Turkey and bacon sandwiches.â
Reggie smiled at Mark. âNo hurry, Cecily. Weâll be in the great room watching a Game of Thrones marathon.â
Reggieâs great room furniture was comfortable. He had two overstuffed chairs and a couch with feather pillows that sat in front of a seventy-inch television.
âI got calls from Bobby and Jason this morning. Theyâre coming for dinner with Keith and Zach. They said they wonât stay long, but they want to lay eyes on you to make sure youâre okay. Are you all right with that? I already cleared it with Cecily.â
âAs long as I donât have to do the cooking.â Reggie laughed.
âIâd poke you, but I donât want to hurt you.â
âWell, thereâs something to be said about getting shot.â
Mark gave him the look.
âIâm immune. It comes from being around Jason since we started playing soccer together when we were ten. Letâs eat lunch, watch TV and cuddle. I want to hold you.â
âOnly if you get a pillow and lay down on the couch. I donât want you to overdo it the first day.â
âAre you going to sleep with me tonight?â
âI will if you want me to,â Mark said in a shy voice. âJason and Bobby said theyâd all help me move upstairs, not that there is much to move.
Reggie sat up too quickly and winced. He grabbed Mark and said, âOf course I want you, you goof. Iâve been hanging around for two years waiting for you.â
âOkay, Iâm all in. Iâll ask the guys to help.â
âGood, thatâs finally settled.â Reggie got comfortable again on the sofa.
âShould we have Eddie Rowan in for supper?â Mark put an afghan over Reggie and stuffed one of the couch pillows under his head.
âWhoâs Eddie Rowan?â
âThe security guy on this shift. He sits outside and patrols the property. Heâs suggesting we install a perimeter alarm.â Mark fussed with the couch pillows. âMaybe we should buy you a recliner.â
âA recliner would be nice. As to a perimeter alarm, it wouldnât have done us an ounce of good. He shot at us from a car on a public street. Why donât we call Jack and invite him to eat with us too? That way we can get a heads up on how the investigation is going and he can coordinate with Mr. Rowan.â
âGood idea. Iâll call him now.â
âNow that weâre both going to be home for a while, it makes sense to take care of our security immediately. Are you working this weekend?â
âThe club is reopening after the renovation.â
âYou didnât answer my question.â
âYes, Jason said heâd cover for me, but itâs time. Youâre home, and Iâd like to have some money of my own.â Reggie began to speak. Mark held up his hand. âIâve already accepted the fact in my head that youâre going to buy me things. But to preserve my self-respect, I have to work, even if only on the weekends.
