“Tazia, go out and play with Chief. Try to keep him from barking while Zach is sleeping, please. Daddy’s gotta lie down for a while.” Ben eased down onto the couch, wincing. His head throbbed, and he’d spent most of the morning hanging over the porcelain throne. Medication had never agreed with him. He could tough out the pain, but the nightmares were another story. How many times in the night had he witnessed Delbert’s accident all over again?

“He’s barking ‘cause someone is here!” Tazia pulled the curtain back and pressed her face against the window. “In a yellow car. They’re getting out. I see shoes. And legs.” She turned, her eyes narrowing. “Yep. Looks like they’re wearing church clothes.”

Ben groaned. As much as he appreciated their kindness, if he had to look at another spongy casserole from the ladies at church—”

“Daddy, it’s the nurse from my school! Ew. Don’t let her take your temperature. It makes your ear tickle. Maybe since she’s not wearing her nurse clothes that she had on at school today, you’re safe.” Tazia raced from the window to the foyer.

Ben sat up, but immediately regretted it. The room spun and he reached for the back of the rocking chair trying to steady himself, praying whatever was left in his stomach would stay there.

When the doorbell rang, he considered telling Tazia not to answer it.

Too late.

Lil’s voice was like a healing balm.

Ben straightened up and took a step toward the foyer, rubbing a hand across his whiskered chin. He probably looked like road kill. He raked greasy hair with his fingers, and then checked his breath. At least he’d brushed his teeth today—making progress, anyway.

“Looks like another one of those casseroles we gotta eat, huh, Daddy?”

Lil chuckled. “Hello Ben.” Fat oven mitts at the end of her slender arms gripped a foil-covered casserole dish.

“You shouldn’t have.” He scratched his head.

“Hope you don’t mind that I’ve dropped by.”

“No, please come in. Enter at your own risk, though. Apparently my maid took the day off.”

“Don’t fib her, Daddy. We don’t have a maid. But we sure need one!” Tazia’s hands were on her hips.

Ben rolled his eyes. “I was kidding. What are you doing out here, Lil?” She was the best medicine he could have hoped for.

“I thought I’d bring you and the kids some dinner.”

“Thanks.” He smiled, despite the casserole. “Let me help.” Ben turned, reaching for the dish, but the room spun in the opposite direction. “Oh boy,” he said, and blew a deep, slow breath between his cheeks.

“Sit down. You look pale. Tazia can show me the kitchen, and then I think I better take a look at you.”

Ben didn’t have any choice, the seat of the couch met his sore body.

“I hope you still like fried chicken. I thought you may be growing tired of casseroles by now.” Her voice trailed as she followed his daughter.

Ben managed a grin. The woman was a saint. “My favorite. I’m surprised you remembered.” Ben leaned back, resting his head against the soft pillow.
