An SS soldier on a road somewhere in Italy. He is standing in front of a light Horch cross-country vehicle and is holding a tortoise. It was in August 1943 that Hitler ordered the transfer of his elite SS Panzer Corps from the Eastern Front to Italy following the Italian capitulation in July. This type of sudden shift became characteristic of the employment of the crack SS divisions during the second half of the war, as Hitler used them as a ‘fire brigade’ to reinforce trouble spots. Note the lettering on the rear of the vehicle ‘Abstand 30m’ (spacing 30 metres) to ensure that vehicles did not bunch together in convoy, and the white paint applied to enhance visibility for night time driving.
