CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Dad, you don’t have to sit with me until Wade comes in. I’m not exactly alone,” she smiled, waving her hand around the room at the dozens of other people sitting having their meal.

“Maybe your old dad wants to sit with you. Your mom is with Matthew and some of the riggers, checking out some things at the wells. I get to sit with my favorite girl in the room.” Hannah laughed, nodding at her father as he set their trays on the table. Taking the seat across from him, she reached for his hand.

“Dad? If I haven’t told you, thank you for everything you’ve ever done for me. The life you’ve given me. I don’t know how Mom and I got so lucky, but you’ve been there for me every step of the way. I love you so much, and it’s honestly what helped me to know that I really love Wade. Watching you and Mom love one another was all the life lesson I needed.”

“Oh, baby, loving you and your mom was so damn easy. That night I was protecting her in New Orleans, she was about seven months pregnant. I rolled over and felt you move, and I knew that you were mine,” he said with a tear in his eye. Hannah knew the story. He’d told it dozens of times, and he got choked up every time.

“You’re such a special man, Dad. Not a lot of men could love a child that wasn’t theirs biologically.”

“I could,” smirked Baptiste.

“Me too,” said Ivan.

“Definitely me,” said Gaspar, laughing. Hannah chuckled, nodding at the men.

“Present company excluded. Although you guys aren’t exactly your run-of-the-mill, average, everyday man. No, no. You’re superheroes. Faster, stronger, smarter, and more capable of loving than the average man.” Gaspar grinned at the young woman, nodding.

“I’m lucky enough that she’s gonna be my daughter-in-law,” smiled Zulu. “Biology means nothing when it comes to loving a child, Hannah, or a teammate. It’s why we all do what we do. Saving women, children, animals, anyone who is in harm’s way. We see it as our duty.”

“But that’s why I love you all so much,” she said, staring at them. “When I was taken by those two idiots in the swamp, I knew that you guys would find me. I just knew it. They’d hinted that a man had been going around showing my picture and wanted me. I think it was the professor or Huang. Those two decided that they were going to keep me. But I knew you all would come for me. Now, as I think about poor Mia out there with no one to worry for her, it’s breaking my heart.”

“Did you speak with her when she was at the university?” asked Zulu.

“Yes. Like I told the others, she had a panic attack because she’s claustrophobic. I just held her hand and spoke to her until she calmed. Afterwards, we had a cup of coffee together until her ride came to pick her up. She’s about three years older than me, but she’s wonderful.
