0330 May 12: It can’t be worse than a strong gale out there now. Compared to what we had this is nothing. I can steer with one hand and stay behind the wheel just by wedging an elbow against the column that supports the overhead. Not necessary to use the death grip any more.

0430 May 12: Jeff and I both feel like we’re going to pass out. Inside the boat is a wreck, but everything still seems to be working. The bilges have been pumped. The engines are still ticking smoothly. All we need to do is stay awake and away from the reefs until the sun comes up. Now we’re just waiting for daylight and Suez.

The route of China Blue was from Hong Kong to Singapore; then to Sri Lanka and across the Indian Ocean to Aden. From Aden, it braved the Red Sea; transited the Suez Canal; and wound up in the Mediterranean, including Haifa, Malta, and Gibraltar. Crossing the Atlantic took Shep and Jeff to the Canaries, Cape Verdes, and then a 2,160 mile run to Barbados. Finally, they worked their way north through the Caribbean Islands to Fort Lauderdale, where the voyage officially ended 13 months and 20,000 miles later.

Speed for the voyage ranged from 6.74 to 7.40 depending on winds and currents. Nautical miles per gallon ranged from 1.93 to 3.24, with 3 nmpg being rather typical. Cost per mile ranged from 13 to 25 cents depending on fuel prices.
