“Where does the punk live?” I said, glancing over at Mick, then eyeing Dorothy through the rearview mirror as I drove west toward the waterfront.

It’s a small island. I figured they should at least have an idea.

“He’s got a place not far from here,” Mick said.

I turned left, cruising south along the seawall. Less than five minutes later, I pulled into the parking garage beside the movie theater. The timing matched up nearly perfectly, with Ange and Scarlett stepping out through the sliding glass doors a minute after we stopped.

Mick climbed into the back, Scarlett sat beside Dorothy, and Ange took the passenger seat so I could bring her up to speed. I told her everything while cruising back onto the coastal road, continuing south.

She fired off a question before I finished.

“Does he know where the wreck is?” she said, her analytical mind in overdrive.

Mick shot me an impressed look, then said, “No. Just a broad area. Not close enough to pinpoint it without intensive searching with top-of-the-line equipment.”

My wife had managed to identify the most important question. It was the most pivotal query for two reasons: one, it showed that we all knew the motive for Rico’s capture, and two, it showed that the kid was likely still alive. If he had been abducted to help criminals locate the wreck, they’d likely beat him for answers. Since he didn’t have the answers, they’d leave him alive. At least for the time being. In my experience, once criminals get what they want from someone, the victim is usually dealt with in the most discreet way possible.

“The police on it?” Ange said.

“Just like they’re supposedly on the other missing people as well,” I said sarcastically. “This one seems different, though. Local kid. Visibly upset officers at the crime scene. And no chance of reasoning it away with cartel involvement. But—”

“But you’re going to get involved,” Ange said.

I sighed. “Every time I speak to Officer Ramirez it’s like the guy’s got higher-ups breathing down his neck. I don’t know who it is. Likely a bought-off politician or police chief. Whoever it is, somebody’s got them on a leash. Big money and power behind the scenes. He even said so back at the boat launch.”

We fell silent as I accelerated past the southern cruise pier, the landscape gradually shifting from city to forest. I pushed the Jeep hard and soon pulled into our complex, the guard opening the gate. Crunching across the gravel, I parked in our reserved spot.

I left the engine running. Sat frozen with my hands on the vibrating wheel, then shot a look at Ange. It was a familiar one. One she knew well. We had a whole conversation with our eyes, then I looked at the dashboard clock. Every second that ticked on was increasing the chances of no one ever seeing Rico again.

“Come on,” Ange said, pushing open her door. “Everyone inside.”

Dorothy slid out, then Scarlett. Mick hesitated, then leaned forward.

“I’m going with you,” he said flatly. Before I could interject, he held up a hand.
