Wednesday dawns bright and clear, but my head is killing me.

I slept poorly, dreams of ghosts running from me and zombies rising from the ground to chase after me. Barely functioning when Logan drops off Moxley, I hand him a piece of toast with jam on it—the best I can do for breakfast—and wish him a good day before I jump in the shower.

When I return, I find he’s left a steaming cup of coffee outside the bathroom door, and a bowl of fresh fruit waits for me on the kitchen table.

I love this man.

Our first appointment is Lana Sims, who can’t decide on a dress. She loves The Bellamy with its simplistic lines and flapper-inspired glitz, but she also feels the same about The Winter. She’ll try on samples again, and hopefully, make a decision.

Rosie arrives first, seeming more chipper. “Good morning,” she calls out.

From the kitchen, downing more coffee, I reply and drag myself to her desk. I’ve already replaced The Bellamy sample on the mannequin and have it ready for Lana when she arrives. Winter sent me some info from her voodoo friend and things don’t look good. Getting that hitchhiker out of Stout is going to be hair-raising, no two ways around it. I’ve decided I have to tackle one thing at a time, and right now, I need to make sure Rosie is up to par. “How are you?”

She sets down a travel mug and apple on the desk. Fern hops from the tote and nestles under a blanket in her bed. “Much better. I overdid it yesterday and didn’t watch my food intake. Low blood sugar gets me every time. I’m better equipped today.”

Jenn comes early, since she loves Wednesdays and watching brides try on the designs and have their fittings. This morning we have Lana and two other ‘lookers’ as we call them, and hope all three decide to buy.

The afternoon is reserved for fittings with those who’ve already chosen their gowns. Gloria and her partner, Joseph, take care of the details. Together, they run Miss Jasmine’s Boutique Bridal Designs, and thankfully, they’ve fallen in love with my line, and are putting in the hours to supply all the orders I take.

Lana shows up early, eager to begin. Her maid of honor and mother come with her. Jenn takes her to my uncle’s old den, which I’ve remodeled as a changing room. I left most of his furniture, repainted the forest green walls a pale pink—after multiple coats of primer—and added a screen for privacy. Wedding parties can be with the bride if she wishes, or they can sit in the main area until she comes out for the reveal.

Lana’s party waits on the sofa and Rosie offers them tea and coffee. The mother asks after Mama and we discuss the weather, the Founder’s Day excitement, and she requests I convince her daughter that The Bellamy is the better choice because it makes her hips appear smaller.

Skirting issues such as this is a full-time job in my line of work.
