Three days after claiming the Grandview Shopping Center, Kaelen stood on the roof of their new base, looking out over a city that had been transformed beyond recognition. Sarah used her time to organize the massive amounts of medical supplies they’d salvaged from the mall’s pharmacy.

But routine meant safety, and in this new world, safety was an illusion.

Jessica looked up from the magical textbook she’d been studying. “What does that mean for us?”

“It means our advantage isn’t going to last.” Frank examined his hands, which had grown stronger and more resilient from the System’s enhancement. “We need to be more aggressive. We can’t just sit here and wait for them to adapt to our tactics.”

Mike had been unusually quiet during the morning meeting. When they asked him about it, he gestured to the portable radio they’d been using to monitor survivor broadcasts.

“There’s been no word from Commander Mitchell for eighteen hours,” he said quietly. “No word from any survivors at all.”

The blue screen displayed new data that made his blood run cold:

A knock on the conference room door interrupted his thoughts. Since they’d taken over the mall, they’d been taking in any survivors they could find. So far, they’d rescued three people—a maintenance worker who’d been hiding in the basement for days, a young mother with her infant daughter, and an elderly man who claimed to have been a retired marine.
