"I'LL HELP YOU SOLVE your own mystery." Kat was looking at me with serious eyes. We were on the floor of my room again.

"What mystery?"

"The one that's stuck in your heart. The one about your Mom."

"What do you know about solving mysteries?"

"I hear the stories you read through you mind. How Nancy Drew finds clues and puts the pieces together. I like to think you are a lot like her and me - no mom around."

I petted Kat's head. "How do you figure that a bunch of fiction stories tell us how to solve mysteries?"

"Because your human fiction is just another way for people to tell their own life stories - or how they'd solve it if they were there. So all fiction is education. Go ahead. I know you've got some other mystery books. Read them and we'll compare notes."

I looked at the puppy and into her serious eyes. "I know you want to help me, but I don't know how you can help me find 'clues' about an accidental death."

"But you think there is more to that death than people have told you."

I nodded.

"So you just have to trust me. Keep looking for what you want to find and something will show up."

Kat then sat up and tried to lick my face, but as she wasn't quite tall enough yet, she then stood to jump up on my shoulder. This caught me by surprise and I fell back down on my back. She climbed on me and her kisses tickled. I had to smile as I half-attempted to get her to stop.

Funny thing was, it felt good to smile. That cloud of sad just pushed off for just a little bit.

Kat quit licking me for a bit and I looked up at her. She was standing on my chest and grinning wide. "I knew there was one of those in there somewhere!"

I pushed the smile away and play-frowned at her. "OK, you win. Help me solve that mystery and I'll be able to smile more often."

Kat gave me one last lick on my nose. "Deal."

Then she jumped over and pulled all her toys into her bed, snuggling among them. Paws under her chin, ears perked at me, she had a smile on her own face - too cute.

I let one corner of my mouth come up. "OK, you sit there. I'm going to get another book I haven't opened for awhile. Then we can test your theory."

I stood up and reached for a book on the far end of the shelves above my little desk. "Here: Baum's 'The Daring Twins' - it's about a whole family of orphans. That should suit us."

"How many orphans?"

"Five, I think. Let me get into it and we'll see."

I put the book on the bed by my pillow, and then lifted Kat up. Climbing up and pushing both pillows behind my back, Kat was soon curled right next to me.

And reading to myself, knowing that Kat was listening even with her shut eyes, made it more satisfying than usual.
