“I told you I’m fine,” Jerra insisted, following Everson into a pitiful clinic on the other side of town.

The commander ignored her, barging into the clinic and asking for the physician from a cowering young woman at the back of the room. She flitted away to retrieve the doctor while Everson directed Jerra to the waiting seats by the door.

“This is unnecessary,” she grumbled, but obliged.

“You’re my charge. I have to ensure you are in good shape for the rest of our journey. You could have a broken nose or broken ribs.”

“I think I would know if my ribs were broken,” she said. “I’m a bit sore, is all.”

“Perhaps you’re right. The physician will confirm, and then we will be on our way,” he growled.

“What’s gotten into you?” she asked, leaning forward to examine a delicate plant on the low table in front of them. “We might not always get along, but you’ve never been this blatantly rude to me.”

He softened next to her. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m not sure what’s gotten into me. This journey has been…harder than most. And we still have so much left to accomplish.”

She sat back in her chair. “We’ll get there, Everson. Nothing will stop me from saving my sister.”

“That’s what I’m worried about,” he mumbled.

Just then, a grumpy-looking old man wandered in from a back room. “You are the injured girl?” he asked, peering at her with dark eyes over thin spectacles. His wispy white hair was combed back against the sides of his head, and he wore a simple black blazer over a gray sweater.

“I’m not injured, just sore,” Jerra said, shooting a look at Everson. “The commander here wants to make sure nothing is broken before we leave town.”

The old man nodded. “Come this way,” he said, gesturing toward the back room.

Everson stood, but the physician waved him away. “You wait out here. I will see to the lady’s injuries without an audience.”

He turned and walked away, Jerra following, though she didn’t miss an opportunity to spin and stick her tongue out at Everson. The vaguest hint of a smile curled at the edges of his lips.

The old man led her into a short hallway which branched off into four rooms. He directed her into the first room on the left and instructed her to sit on a low table against the far wall.

His gaze cast over her silver hair and eyes, and she watched as realization dawned on him.

They’re right about you.

Voice of Darkness.

“Now then,” he said, taking a seat in the chair opposite the table. “I am Doctor Edenveil. What is your name, young lady?”

“My name is Jerra, sir.”

He chuckled. “Call me Alven.”

“Hello, Alven,” she said as she blushed.

He sat up straighter. “Now, my second question. Did that man out there hurt you?”

Jerra’s eyes widened, and then she burst into laughter. “I’m sorry for laughing, Alven,” she managed between wheezes, “but the thought of Everson wanting to touch me at all is quite funny.”

He chuckled. “Well, good. I had to be sure.
