CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

PARKED ACROSS THE road in the shadows, Danny sat watching the large three-storey Georgian townhouse. He waited an hour as various men came and went, shuffling off nervously into the night. The crescent itself was quiet with hedges and trees lining either side of the road; they also shielded the brothel from prying eyes. With no sign of Yuri or his men, he crossed the street and pressed the buzzer.

‘Hello?’ came Magda’s voice over the speaker.

‘Err, hello. I was told to come here if I wanted, err, company,’ said Danny acting nervously.

‘Who told you?’

‘Err, a skinny ginger guy, Trevor.’

‘Ok, come in, up the stairs,’ came Magda’s voice as the lock buzzed open.

The decor inside was modern and tasteful, which surprised Danny. He met Magda sitting behind her desk at the top. Behind her half a dozen prostitutes in lingerie and silk gowns sat around on red velvet sofas.

‘Evening, gorgeous. This your first time?’ Magda asked with a false smile. She handed him a leather folder like a menu in a restaurant.

‘Tell the girls what you want, yeah? You pay first, ok, prices are all in there. Now what’s your preference, white, black, Asian?’

‘Trevor told me about a girl called Ana. He said she would look after me,’ said Danny trying to sound insistent without commanding.

‘Ana is busy, but Caprice here will look after you,’ Magda said, summoning a leggy blonde woman from the sofa.

‘No, no. Sorry, I want Ana. I’m happy to pay,’ said Danny, pulling a roll of notes out of his pocket, courtesy of Trevor.

‘Ok, ok. Caprice go and get Ana,’ ordered Magda eyeing the money.

‘Two hundred for Ana, you pay now. She’s a very special girl.’

‘I’m sure she is,’ said Danny handing over the money as he eyed a skinny, pale woman coming down the stairs. She smiled falsely and walked over to him. Reaching out she led him by the hand up the stairs. She took him into a bedroom decorated in silvers and greys with a large four-poster bed. Closing the door behind her she walked up to Danny and ran her hands up his chest.

‘What can I do for you, lover boy?’ asked Ana in Romanian-broken-English.

Danny gently took her hands and sat her on the bed.

‘Ana, I just want to talk to you.’

‘Talk is okay. Some just want to talk first.’

‘No, I need to ask you about the girl Yuri’s men brought here,’ Danny said calmly but poised to gag her if she shouted out.

‘Who are you? I, I can’t tell you, they will kill me,’ she said, shaking, her eyes wide with fear.

‘Shh, it’s ok, listen to me. No one will ever know. Is she here? You know they are going to kill her.’ Danny spoke softly keeping his eyes locked on hers.

She sat shaking, her eyes flicking from Danny to the door.

‘Belek and Adrik came and took her this morning. Please, you can’t tell anyone,’ she said, tears welling up in her eyes.

‘Ana, tell me all you know and I’ll help you get out of here.
