TWELVE

I was startled awake by Lucas. He hopped onto the foot of my bed all happy and ready to start the day. I tried to groan and roll over but I caught sight of my alarm clock. “Oh jeez, is it really almost eight? I’m supposed to meet Marlo to go to the shop,” I cried as I leaped out of bed.

“I thought we were doing family chores today,” Lucas said with a mix of joy and sadness.

“I will later today and tomorrow. I have to go work for a while.”

“Okay. You just said you’d be here more and I was hoping more would happen now.” I could hear the sadness in his voice as he slumped out of my room.

“Hey Luke, I’ll make some time for checkers, okay?”

“Okay,” he said, happy once again. If only I could fix all my relationship problems with checkers.

I skipped the shower, dressed in shorts, a tee, a sweatshirt, and my running shoes. I threw some clean clothes in my duffle and hurried downstairs to grab some breakfast on the go.

“You be careful about overdoing it. Call me if your leg is aching,” my mom nagged.

“Okay, Na-hag,” I said with a laugh.

“What? I’m not a nag!”

“N.A.H.G. not N.A.G. Not Always Helpful Grownups! I crack myself up.”

“Wow, awake and joking around. Did you have a good night’s sleep or are you becoming a morning person?” She smiled to lessen the sting.

I left for Marlo’s with a spring in my step. It felt good to laugh and be lighthearted. It had been a while. Marlo was up and ready to go when I got there. Since he was a much better planner than me, he had remembered to set his alarm.

We headed out on our long walk to the pawnshop. I figured it might take us around forty minutes to get there. I wasn’t far off. Marlo and I were both puffing when we arrived. We made sure to call our moms to let them know we were safely at the shop.

White Eagle was surprised to see us. We told him we had walked for exercise and were sorry we were a little early but we weren’t sure how long it would take.

“No, you misunderstand. I thought you were Max. He’s late. Maybe I’ll call him. I hate to bother him but he usually calls me if he won’t be here to open the shop. Today he didn’t call.”

We left White Eagle to his chores and headed to the back to stretch after our walk and start some Tai Chi.

“You know what?” Marlo mused aloud. “I think if you’re willing, I may actually try to run with you. You were so far ahead of me because of cross country that I thought I could never catch up. With you starting out walking again I think I might have a chance.”

“That’s great, Marlo. I would love to run with you when they clear me to do that. I have to start swimming. Maybe you could do that too.
