Chapter 7

It was Full Light, which meant she had a few hours to get to her parents and work things out before she needed to check on Bryggen. Determined to get answers, she set out into the city streets. It was probably the first time in years that she had ventured into town without trying to hide her identity. Erynidd didn’t even give it a second thought.

After about an hour, she found herself in front of her parents’ house. She hadn’t seen this place since she ran away. It looked smaller than she remembered and so foreign. The pain associated with her childhood came back to her almost all at once. It threatened to unnerve her, but she clung to Gorlan’s words. She would conquer this. She dug through her pack and slipped on the silver armlet. Satisfied, she marched up to the door and knocked three times. She waited for a moment and the door slowly swung open.

“Yes,” her mother said. “Can I help you?”

Erynidd just stared for a second. She took in her mom—a stranger now. It felt awkward but she said, “Hi mom. It’s me. Erynidd.”

Her mother’s face flashed a mix of emotions—excitement, fear, longing, and sadness. It took a while for her mother to respond. “Oh, Eryn. I missed you,” she said. Her mother clumsily reached for her and grabbed her hand, uncertain how Erynidd would react. Erynidd let her mom take her hand and followed her mom into the house. Her mom caressed her arm tracing her fingers over the armlet. Tears formed in her eyes.

“Let me get your father. He will want to see you too. Wait here.”

Erynidd waited in the entryway for a minute until her father came lumbering into view. “Bless my soul,” he said. “Erynidd. You’ve grown up.”

“Hi, dad.” Erynidd held out her arms for a hug, but he only managed to reach out and take her left hand with both of his. Clearly, things were still a little strained. But she was here to fix all that.

“Can I have a seat? I have so much I want to talk about.”

“Of course, dear. Of course,” her mom said. “Come into the dining area. We have some new chaise lounge chairs that would make the perfect place to relax. She led them all to the seats. They were set in a semicircle so that each faced inward but not directly at one another. It seemed fitting given the way they had treated her growing up. She took a seat in the middle of the three loungers and sat back. Her mother and father took their place at her sides.

“I know there is a lot to say and I know I won’t say everything that I want to, and I know that I am going to blunder this whole thing up and...” Erynidd was rambling. She scolded herself as she took several deep breaths. “Sorry, let me start again.”

“First, let me apologize for running away. I was lonely and scared. All I felt was pain and I could only see two ways out.
