The old man stared in mounting dismay at his offspring, who paced restlessly back and forth in front of him.

“This woman, Casey Farrell, Father, something must be done about her. She is rapidly becoming a nuisance, and my feeling is that she does not discourage easily.”

The old man shook his head. “As I promised, I have made some inquiries into her background. She is far from being an experienced investigator. I seriously doubt that she will uncover anything harmful; and you have assured me that there are no witnesses, and no damning evidence. So what harm can she do?”

“Even an idiot may stumble across something. I told you everything was clean, no witnesses, no evidence; but there is always a chance that she could come across something I haven’t thought of, some thread that would unravel the whole affair. I don’t want to take that chance.

“And speaking of assurances, you assured me that you would bring pressure to bear to derail this entire investigation.”

The old man stirred uneasily. “I have tried, but it’s not that simple. My influence can only extend so far. The slaughter of five people can arouse a great deal of indignation, and the Governor is determined to prove the worth of this new task force. Bob Wilson, the head of the task force, is extremely ambitious, and hopes to use his position on it to advance to higher things. He won’t let this be swept under the rug.”

“Then I must do something about this woman on my own.”

The old man felt his heart tremble, as he gazed at the icy smile on the face of his favorite child. “Please,” he said, “no more killing!”

The smile grew colder still. “I will do what is necessary, Father.”
