But, is it possible that Ted really was interested in religion? Was he becoming anxious about his soul and about his sins? Considering that he had already expressed his indifference for the concepts of right and wrong, did he even believe that killing someone was a sin? Did he fear punishment from God? I had the following conversation with him about this:

Ted, what is anxiety like for you?

I don’t waste emotional energy or weaken myself by letting small matters bother me. Law school may have caused some anxiety but I don’t get nervous without a cause. To stay level headed and rational is important.

What is your philosophy of life?

I’m not sure if there is any brief way to summarize it. I remember trying to come up with one not long ago. I’ve come up with a hundred speeches for Judge Hansen.

Man is an arrogant creature believing he can control the universe. If you get in a jet you see how insignificant you are.

What is your belief about happiness and love?

I should be able to live my lifestyle to the degree it doesn’t interfere with others. I believe in non-violence. I’m opposed to the Vietnam War. I want gun control.

Have you even been violent?

I struck Liz only once and it was lightly when she was hysterical.

What’s your belief about death?

It’s inevitable for each of us… I haven’t had much experience with it. Presently, I don’t fear death. I face it here at the prison. I don’t fear anyone or anything. I have no belief in life after death. Life on the earth has purpose and meaning. If there is life after death you will live it and have a good one. If not, you will have fulfilled your purpose here.

What’s your personal view of life after death?

I don’t plan on it. If there is one okay, and if not, okay. My view of death is that the concept was created for security, to have a feeling of immortality. Heaven should be a pure intellectual existence. Heaven is an ideal material world as people see it.

I believe heaven is a pure intellectual force where I can convene with others who have passed on. To become immortal and preserve one’s soul is of lasting value. The forces guiding my destiny are not open to a rational approach. With what has happened, even though I am innocent, I don’t feel that my word will be accepted in any way.
