Can art reveal forms of violence that are hidden or invisible?

The visual artist Alfredo Jaar has transformed art in terms of how we recognize ourselves as witnesses to suffering. This requires taking seriously manifestations of violence as they appear in everyday broadcasting, as well as those more subtle forms that may be hidden in plain sight. Jaar’s message is clear: while violence is no doubt devastating and endemic to modern societies, art still has the capacity to move people and, in the process, inspire a new form of politics.
