Chapter 11
It was still early when Al passed through Kings Cross and spotted Leeds standing by the alleyway talking to what was clearly a punter.
âHeâs at it again,â Al thought as he watched the punter hand over money and disappear up the alley. âYouâre the lowest of the low.â
Al continued his stroll down to a café by Kings Cross station where he met with Leaky. The two men ordered a full English breakfast and strong, hot, tea.
âWe may have trouble,â Leaky said as he cut into the pork sausage.
âWhatâs up?â
âVodka Pat was nicked yesterday.
âShit!â Al said, putting his knife and fork down.
Vodka Pat was a major supplier of stolen credit cards. She would use brake fluid to remove the signature and then sell them on. The recipients could then sign the stolen card themselves and use up all the credit. Vodka Pat had earned her nickname because she drank, on average, three full bottles of vodka every day. She had a turbulent relationship with her black boyfriend from Brixton. On one occasion during an argument, the boyfriend had produced a decoratorâs knife and sliced open her cheek. She managed to get to hospital and have the wound sewn up, but she was scarred for life. Al believed that it was the scar that made her increase her drinking from one bottle of vodka to three.
âWhat happened?â
âFrom what Iâve been told, Vodka Pat was out of her mind drunk, she stripped off and then traipsed off down the shops, stark bollock naked, and bought three bottles of Vodka. As you can imagine, seeing her like that caused a bit of a stir and somebody has called the old bill.â
âBloody drink and drugs,â Al thought. âBuggers up good business.â
âWell Vodka Pat has drunk the bloody lot and is sprawled out unconscious on the bed. Sheâs only gone and left the door open and the old bill have swooped in and found all the credit cards.â
âIs she talking?â
âNot a word.â
âYouâre right, this could be a problem,â Al said as he picked up his cutlery and cut into his bacon.
âThe old bill is talking about a hundred grand plus in cards that were taken.â
âThat was our pay day,â Al thought as he ate the bacon.
As Al popped the last of his fried bread into his mouth, he spotted Doreen pass by the window.
âDoreen!â Al called out.
Doreen turned, smiled, and came into the café.
Al immediately noticed that she had bruises on her face and arms.
âWhat happened to you?â
âAlbert McInnerney did it.â
âDid what?â Al asked as the anger began to build in his stomach.
Leaky motioned the young girl behind the counter to bring over three teas.
âAlbert was in need of a place to stay, so I reluctantly agreed. He paid and could be good company sometimes.â
âRight,â Al said motioning her to continue.
âWell it was all going okay until one night and weâve both had a couple of drinks.
