WHEN GERBER LEFT, Fetterman dropped into the chair that he had been using and pointed at the charts. "Okay, gentlemen," he said in mock seriousness. "Now that the brass is gone, we can get this thing figured out right."

He waited for comments and when no one spoke, said, "First for the team dropping on the camp. We'll wear aggressor fatigues. Chutes will be black too, probably the PC commander." He stopped and looked at the new men: "You guys HALO qualified?"

Hollinger immediately shook his head. "Nope." Fetterman grinned. "Galvin, I know you are, so you'll have to replace Hollinger."

"Captain's not going to like it," said Bocker.

"Can't be helped," said Fetterman. "Without commo we're suddenly red. As it is, we're amber."

Bocker couldn't help laughing. "Captain's not going to like it," he repeated.

"You other two?"

Ruppelt shrugged. "Not really."

"Not really?" said Fetterman. "What's not really mean?"

"I started to get my qualification, but my orders for Vietnam came through so I didn't finish the Q course." "Sayer?"

"I'm qualified."

"That's something, anyway." Fetterman began a list. "How about you, Blackhead?"

"I'm qualified but I don't like HALOs."

"Hell," said Fetterman, "I don't like jumping out of perfectly good airplanes."

"No such thing as a perfectly good airplane," said Washington, almost as if the banter had become part of the whole ritual.

"There you have it," said Fetterman. "Okay, I'll advise the captain of the changes when he returns."

With that finished, they settled down and started through the plan again. Fetterman talked about each of the aerial assault men carrying a silenced, high-standard .22. There was a parkerized H-D Military version with a bull barrel, already threaded for the silencers. With the ammunition provided by Winchester, light loads that prevented the bullet from breaking the sound barrier, they could shoot up the place without making much noise. Those weapons were available easily. They talked again about the parachutes, using black fatigues, and the coordination of the jumpers with the men on the ground. Fetterman found a couple of other flaws, worked them out and then sat back.

"I like it," he said. "Simple but exotic. Uses all the resources without overusing them. If nothing else, we should dazzle the little fuckers with our footwork."

"So now what?" asked Blackhead.

"Now we have some beer," said Fetterman.
