Charles listened to three of the radios heâd modified as he disassembled a Fosk-ha helmet. With a little imagination, he could pretend he was back in college, taking apart and rebuilding gaming consoles for his roommates.
Thoroughness and patience were his virtues now. One piece at a time and donât worry about a dang thing.
âMerc One for Momma Bear,â a static-covered voice said.
The reply was mostly squelch.
Charles adjusted the tuning knob, then heard the same voice on another radio he had set to another channel.
âAre you here?â
âMomma Bear reads you loud and clear,â a woman replied.
His heart leaped. He knew that voice!
That is Emily. For the love of God, I am listening to my wife!
He snatched up the receiver, then hesitated. What if he spooked them? What if his connection alerted the Fosk-ha to what was clearly a covert channel and got them killed?
âHow are the little bears?â Merc One, Security Chief Halloran, asked. The gruff soldier sounded differentâlike his voice had too much reverb.
Tears ran down Charlesâs face. His hands shook. Thank. You. God.
âTheyâre playing in the garden. I can see them from where Iâm at, just like you suggested. Line of sight at all times,â Emily said.
Charles memorized every word she spoke, desperately afraid it would be the last he heard of her voice.
âGood girl, Momma Bear,â Halloran said. Something was wrong with his voice. Haunted tones inflected his words and there was a mechanical cadence that wasnât like himâvery slight, but detectable.
Staring at the radio mic didnât give Charles the courage to make the call. Doubts surfaced like shadow creatures, little devils whispering in his ear that if he made a mistake, the Fosk-ha would know and punish the love of his life and his children.
âTell me when youâre in position, Red,â Halloran said.
âI see them, Merc One,â another woman said.
Anna OâMally. Charles recognized her voice too. The last time he had seen the security chief and the spy, theyâd been mortally wounded.
But they were alive, and so was his family. Charles wasnât sure if that knowledge made the decisions he had to make easier or harder.
âGeek One for Merc One,â he finally said.
Silence.
Radio static.
âHow copy?â Charles asked.
âHow did you get onto this frequency?â Halloran asked.
âIâve been busy,â Charles said. âCan you hear me, Momma Bear?â
âYes... Geek One,â Emily said, sounding embarrassed. âBut you were never a geek to me. You know that, right? Iâm not going to let him call you that if you donât like it.â
Thatâs my Emily, always in charge, always ready to defend me. Iâd forgotten she did that. His spirit soared at the simple words, and he wanted more than ever to sweep his wife up in his arms and gather their children close.
âIâm just glad to hear you,â Charles said, sniffling only when he let off the talk button. âHow are the little bears?â
âThey miss you.â Static flowed over Emilyâs words.
He wanted to scream but stared at the blocky, reverse-engineered comms device. What a miracle this was! Anything is possible, it whispered.
We donât know until we try.
