CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Cal

SHE LEFT. I wake up expecting to see her still here in my bed, but I remember that she left sometime in the middle of the night. What in the hell do I do with that? If I’m honest, I have no idea what I would have done if she was here when I woke up. But somehow knowing she was freaked out enough to leave makes me feel more alone.

I’m afraid to leave my bedroom. I lie in my bed for hours longer than I want, hoping I’ll hear Logan leave the condo so I can grab some food and mope. I feel like the worst kind of scumbag after giving in to my irresponsible lust for her. I can practically feel all my brothers telling me this was careless and impulsive. Typical Cal, giving in to a desire just because it’s there, tempting me.

But damn it, last night didn’t feel impulsive. Nothing about that was anything like previous encounters where I fucked first and dealt with consequences later. I don’t think the intensity I felt last night was one-sided, but of course I didn’t have a conversation about that with Logan.

I got into this mess on a whim, signing a lease without meeting my new landlord-slash-roommate. God, what if she throws me out now? What did she say earlier when she woke up? I cringe, remembering that I asked her to cuddle.

Eventually, I don’t hear anything for a long enough time that it seems safe for me to at least go to the bathroom. I pee for what feels like a decade and make my way into the kitchen, freezing when I see Logan on the couch with her computer, typing furiously and nodding her head along with whatever’s flowing through her headphones.

I consider just dashing out the front door like a coward, but two things pull me over to sit on the couch beside her. First, I’m worried that she’s listening to our audiobook without me. Second, I know I have to talk to her about what we did last night, even if it sucks and feels too big and too uncomfortable.

I plunk down next to her and nudge her with my shoulder, realizing that I should probably have put on a shirt or at least some pants before approaching this conversation. I sigh, shaking my head at myself while she pauses whatever she’s jamming to. “Oh, sorry,” she says. “I didn’t hear you come out.” Her eyes widen when she sees that I’m just wearing boxers and I try to stuff a pillow on my lap and reclaim a tiny shred of dignity.

“Just making sure you weren’t listening to the McClintons without me.”

“I would never!” She seems insulted as she pats my arm. “Although, can we listen to a chapter? I’m dying to know what happens in the battle.”

Nicole convinced us to crank up the audio speed to 1.5 so we could ingest more on our commute and then Logan and I agreed we could handle 1.
