Qigong and T’ai Chi

Other Eastern practices such as qigong (or chi-gong) and t’ai chi have effects similar to yoga.

Qigong focuses on breath work while also using meditation and very slow, gentle physical movements to help you imagine energy flowing through your body. This can help calm your nerves, reduce your stress, and lower your heartbeat and respiration rate. It also improves strength and movement.

T’ai chi is similar to qigong in many ways. It offers the same meditation and breathing practice as well as slow, calming movements. This, of course, results in similar benefits to the nervous, cardio, and respiratory systems. It also can improve strength, balance, and flexibility—but whereas qigong is better suited for older people because of its more gentle and less intense movements, t’ai chi’s slightly more intense aerobic element makes it a better choice for young and middle-aged participants, as well as older people who are in generally more robust health.

My friend Joe, a t’ai chi master, made a twenty-minute empowerment video for you, to start using these techniques. Don’t forget that when you do them, whenever possible, you should go out in the grass barefoot, in the sun, and take deep breaths! The video is on your Resources page.
