Not long after he was released from prison, during one of his gigs driving his truck from Cirebon to Madiun, Ajo Kawir saw Gecko. Gecko had taken Wa Sami’s advice to move to Yogyakarta and go to college. Of course his studies had been a bit neglected — that is to say, a total wash — but he’d decided to stay there.

“I’ve begun to understand what my privates want.”

“And what does your bird say?”

“He is choosing the way of tranquility. Like a Sufi. Like a Grandmaster. This bird is taking the path of silence and solitude. He sleeps soundly and peacefully, and I have learned from him.”

“And what exactly have you learned from this bird?”

“To live in silence and solitude — without violence, without hate. I’ve completely stopped fighting. I’ve really taken its message to heart.”

Gecko was determined not to laugh. When they parted, Gecko thought, if the Bird was following a path of silence and solitude, the path of a Grandmaster, maybe it wouldn’t be long before the Bird would learn how to read the holy book and start giving sermons. Imagining that, he laughed silently to himself.
