That is because he feels as if he were overflowing with an abnormal plethora of forces that tend to spread out from him; sometimes he even has the impression that he is dominated by a moral power that transcends him and of which he is but the interpreter. . . . Now, this exceptional surplus of forces is quite real: it comes from the very group that he is addressing.
