Catherine sat at her desk on the second floor, looking over her calendar. She received so many invitations to so many events that she was able to ignore most of them without a second thought. But at least ten a month required either her attendance or her financial support. Two or three engagements a week used to seem perfectly reasonable, but she’d cut back since Jennie had moved in, and as she gazed at the invitation to a major fundraiser for SFMOMA, she was just about to write a check and be done with it. Then it occurred to her that Jen might enjoy going with her, and she quickly got lost in wading through all of the issues that could arise. Most of the people who attended had more money than passion for the art, and she was sure that would be a major turn-off for Jennie. But she herself had started attending benefits when she was still in middle school. It was probably time for Jen to start learning about the responsibilities that came with having a large amount of disposable income. One day she’d inherit a great deal of money, and learning how to manage it now only made sense.

She started when Marta discretely cleared her throat. “There is a man here to see you,” she said quietly.

“Here? Now?” Catherine turned in her desk chair. “Who is it?”

“He says he’s an associate of Senator Evans. His name is Williams.”

“An associate of…” She stood and crossed the hall to stop by her vanity to reapply some lipstick. “Tell him I’ll be right down.”

She was a little annoyed to have the man simply appear, but God only knew what kind of person Jim would hire to do his dirty work. With an image of a beaten-down private detective from an old movie in her head, she descended the stairs to find a tall, fit man wearing what looked to be an expensive suit. He was in the entryway, looking at a piece of sculpture that rested on a tall table. As he turned, she saw that his white shirt and rep tie were also good quality. Private detectives no longer looked like characters from gangster movies.

“Good morning,” she said as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “I’m Catherine. How can I help you?”

He extended his hand, and took hers for a shake. “It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Smith. Dick Williams. I’ve made the arrangements Senator Evans asked me to coordinate. If you’re ready, we can transfer the title of your car today.”

“Today?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He took a look toward the kitchen, probably trying to discern if they could speak freely. “I wanted to have as few interactions as possible, so I didn’t call or write to give you a status report.”

“Oh, well, I suppose that’s a good instinct.” She felt unreasonably nervous, and heard her laugh come out very high-pitched. “I don’t have much experience in these kinds of transactions.”

“That’s just as well,” he said, with a warm smile lighting up his handsome face.
