Bridie plonked herself down at Velda’s side. “Do ye miss your home, Velda?”

“Not really,” shrugged Velda. “I miss my friends, Thorfinn and Oswald, but that’s it. What about you?”

“Na, me neither,” smiled Bridie. “Back home in Pictland, they all told me I was clumsy and daft. I can’t help it if my body doesn’t listen to what my brain is telling it. The Mangy Mutt’s my home now.”

Velda stared into the rippling water. “I wonder what Freya’s doing.”

“Probably in Castle Hengist. That’s in Kent,” said Nissa. “Oh, wait, how did I know that?” She tapped her forehead with her fingers. “Here it comes again! Yes, it’s all coming back!” She pulled out her fish compass before scooting off to adjust course.

Sister Akuba broke off from her singing, letting Mandrake strum on his own. “Did she say Castle Hengist?”

“Yeah, why?” asked Velda.

“I used to be a nun there before Queen Ethelfled banished me. She didn’t like my singing.”

“HA! That doesn’t surprise me – you can actually sing! She sounds like a punctured bagpipe!”

Nissa came running back from the tiller. “Quick, Velda, before my memory goes, there’s something I have to tell you. And you’re NOT going to like it!”
