The city below twinkles under the veil of night, a glittering expanse of opportunity and danger. I pace the length of my penthouse, the dim light casting shadows that dance across the stark, minimalistic décor. My mind races, a tempest of thoughts swirling around my decision—the decision to protect Alyssa at any cost. Each step is heavy with the weight of what this choice could mean.

Alyssa. The name brings with it a torrent of emotions I’ve spent years suppressing. Her defiance, her strength, the way her gaze cuts through the carefully constructed walls I’ve built around my heart—it’s all consuming. I find myself thinking back to moments we’ve shared, the brief flickers of vulnerability that have seeped into my otherwise unyielding existence.

I stop by the window, the cool glass pressing against my forehead. I can see the streets where I’ve forged my empire, where loyalty and fear dance hand in hand. Yet, here I am, torn between the loyalty I owe the Bratva and the undeniable attachment I feel for a woman who is, by all accounts, my enemy.

“Damn it,” I mutter to myself, clenching my fists. I’m willing to risk everything for her safety, and that revelation unsettles me. I can’t afford to be weak; weakness in my world can lead to death.

Just as I attempt to regain some semblance of control, the door swings open, and Lev steps in. His presence is as commanding as ever, but tonight, there's a weight in the air between us that feels charged.

“Viktor,” he says, his tone careful but direct. “We need to talk.”

“About?” I reply, crossing my arms, hoping to mask my inner turmoil.

“About her.” He doesn’t need to specify; we both know he means Alyssa. “There are whispers, rumors that your focus has shifted. This isn’t just a casual interest.”

I swallow hard. “My focus is on the Bratva. Always has been.”

Lev studies me, the silence stretching between us, heavy and oppressive. “But is it? You’re letting personal feelings cloud your judgment. You can’t afford that, Viktor. You know the price of sentimentality in our world.”

I can feel the tension building, my frustration bubbling to the surface. “I won’t harm her. I won’t let anything happen to her.”

Lev narrows his eyes, a mix of disbelief and concern etched on his face. “You’re playing a dangerous game. Protecting her could cost you everything—your position, your life.”

“I’m aware,” I reply, my voice low, holding his gaze. “But I’m willing to take that risk.”

“Then you’re a fool,” he snaps, and for a moment, I can see the genuine concern for my safety in his eyes.

“Fool or not, my decision is made,” I declare, my voice steady. I know the risks, but I can’t shake the feeling that keeping Alyssa safe might be the only thing worth fighting for.

Lev steps back, his expression hardening. “Just remember, Viktor, loyalty to the Bratva is paramount. You cross that line, and there’s no coming back.”

As he leaves, the door clicks shut behind him, and I’m left alone with the weight of my choice.
