My heart thumped hard upon hearing that it was okay for me to see Natasha. The whole thing had been weighing down on me also because I’d known that she’d punch me in the face if I told her overbearing parents about any of what had happened. So essentially, I was the only one in her circle of close friends and family who knew that she was in the hospital.

“Thanks,” she said softly, reaching for my hand. “For staying here all night and for not telling my parents.”

I nodded repeatedly and my eyes teared up when another thought came to mind.

Her wedding.

“Oh right,” she said, bringing a hand to her forehead. “Tomorrow is my wedding day… or was?”

I didn’t say a word and she was able to put two and two together when she realized that Derrick hadn’t been to the hospital to see her at all.

“Why did you leave so abruptly?” I playfully hit the back of her hand. “You had us all so fucking worried.”

“Well,” she said. “Do you blame me? I couldn’t breathe in there. My fiancé is…”

She sighed and shook her head. “My ex-fiancé is a fucking pig. He just always had to go the extra mile to make my life miserable.”

“I guess it had to come to an extreme event such as this for it to end,” I shrugged.

She nodded and I stroked her hair for a few seconds in silence.

“So…,” she said. “You and Dom, what’s going on with that? You said he spent the night here with you?”

I told her a little bit about what happened after we got to the hospital and the way Dom took care of me while I bawled my eyes out after she was admitted.

Of course, I immediately regretted telling her anything when she squealed. “Aw!”

I hated when she did that and I hated it, even more, when her "aw" made me blush.

“Sounds like I picked the wrong goddamn brother,” she chuckled.

“Shut the fuck up,” I said. “And you can have him if you’d like.”

She raised her brow and I got where she was coming from.

It’s funny how sometimes your close girlfriends can see the inner you way better than you can yourself. I’d realized right after I'd said those words that I couldn’t bear the thought of seeing Dom with another woman, of him touching another girl like he touches me.

And yet, I wasn’t ready to admit it — not to myself and definitely not to him.

“You’re right,” I said. “He’s great. But he’s also way more complicated than Derrick.”

“Oh, for sure!” she smiled. “Derrick’s a straight up asshole. There’s nothing complicated about that!”

I burst into a laugh, not knowing how Natasha could bring humor into a situation that I knew was killing her on the inside.

“I’m so proud of you,” I told her.

She smiled. “Good. Does that mean I’m allowed to end up in a hospital again?”

I crinkled my nose and shook my head while she got herself to sit up straight against the bed frame.

“Coming back to Dom’s complication, though,” she said, cupping her hands together.
