Bated fury ran through his veins as Var strode out of the bedroom with his injured omega cradled in his arms. Tremors shook her tiny frame, which fed his rage as did the scent of her blood in the air.

Jaxx had managed to get to his feet, nursing a broken nose. He was quick to move out of the way when Var aimed a kick at him.

“She’s hurt because of you,” he snarled in their language. “Be thankful it’s minor or I would gut you and spread your entrails over the main courtyard.”

That was still an option. Every part of him that was alpha demanded it. His eyes narrowed dangerously, but the soft, broken parth from the tiny female in his arms brought him back to himself. She was terrified, the sharp stink of her fear cutting through the testosterone in the room like a knife.

Aiming a venomous look at the other alpha, Var set his omega on her feet for a moment. He wrapped the soft blanket from the back of the couch, the one she’d kept touching last night, around her slender form. Taking care, he gathered her up into his arms again before striding for the door.

He paused before he walked out. “Even look at my omega again, and I will carve your eyeballs out of your head with a rusty spoon.”

“Does the Overseer know you’ve claimed an omega?” Jaxx’s words followed him like a taunt into the corridor.

Var ignored him. He’d deal with that issue later after Leia had seen a healer.

She stayed quiet, though the steady sound of her parth told him she still sought to calm him even as he calmed her. It was strange, the effect she had on him. He could feel the rage fading, and he knew without looking in a mirror that his eyes had changed back to their normal shade. That had never happened so fast.

“Talk to me, little flower. Did you get a chance to eat before he disturbed you? To bathe? Did he touch you?” he demanded sharply. Friend or not, if Jaxx had laid a hand on her…

“No.” Her reply was soft. “He just scared me and sniffed me a lot.” She shivered. “I didn’t like having him so close to me. It felt wrong.”

His heart swelled at her words. “Good.”

Then he reconsidered. “Not that he scared you. That he didn’t touch you.”

She shook her head, the slide of her hair over her shoulders tickling the side of his neck. With a small growl, he turned his head and buried his nose in her hair as he walked.

“He didn’t,” she said quietly, drawing closer to him as they garnered attention again. They were ever likely to, as with Jaxx. Once the other alphas scented an omega, they were fascinated. This time though her fear was more muted. He rumbled his approval. She was more settled and secure in his protection, as she should be.

None of the alphas they passed made the mistake of looking too long or obstructing his path.
