Joaquin was tempted to go through Sebastian’s wallet. He didn’t. Instead, he gathered up Sebastian’s belongings, and put them in a bag. He’d buy something nicer, a backpack at least, before he returned them to Sebastian. That was what he was going to do. Not stalk Sebastian or play any of the stupid games he’d thought about. He wasn’t out for revenge and wasn’t really angry at Sebastian over the deceit. He might even understand it, eventually.

As it was, Joaquin had decided to stop guessing at why Sebastian had lied about his name—and it was a lie, because Joaquin would have known who Sebastian was had Sebastian given his first name. The only way he’d find out the reason for that would be to talk to Sebastian.

He wasn’t sure he was ready for that yet, or when in fact, he would be up to it. Right then, he felt like his heart had been kicked, though not broken or outright stomped on. He guessed it was because he’d seen the possibility for him and Everett to have something special together, given enough time for them to get to know each other.

And somehow, Everett had gotten under Joaquin’s skin in a short time.

Unless those blue eyes he kept remembering, and the flashes of bruised skin, were real. Had Sebastian visited him in the hospital and talked to him then? Joaquin couldn’t have said if he had. “Damn it.” He was a mess inside and out.

His phone rang, the tune I’ve Always Been Crazy by Waylon Jennings letting him know right away it was Will again. Joaquin answered. “Hey. I need a favor.” He’d tried to get ahold of Will in the cab but had only got Will’s voice mail.

“Yeah, I listened to your message. Marisol is more than welcome to stay at the ranch for a while. There’s the one empty trailer, or she can stay in the bunkhouse. Whichever she prefers. I’m going to love her because she is the only member of your family, excluding you, that’s decent.” Will’s anger came through in every word. “What’s she do? For a job?”

“She’s a nurse,” Joaquin said. “She can get on just about anywhere. Marisol just got back from a year of volunteer work. Bet that’ll look great on her resume.”

“Yeah, some doctor’s office or hospital will snap her up,” Will agreed. “Only thing Ashville has is the one doctor’s office. Don’t know if they need help or not.”

“And I don’t know if she wants to stay in the area. She might head off somewhere else.” It would surprise him if she didn’t.

“She’s always welcome at the MG. Now, about Sebastian.” Will paused.

Joaquin wasn’t up to any kind of head games. “What about him?”

“That’s what I’m asking you!”

“I don’t know, and I sure as shit don’t know what you mean by that,” Joaquin retorted. “Yeah, he told me his name was Everett—”

“Which it is, technically,” Will interrupted.

Joaquin wished Seb could see the eye-roll he was giving him. “I am aware.
