It was evening but nearly not dark enough.

Useful not only with her vision but with her phone also, Ana said, “Sunset at 7:25 pm.”

Ayka wouldn’t know the exact hour and minute but looking up the sky, she gauged total darkness to be at least an hour away. They were in the bar parking lot, standing outside Kevin’s silver SUV, but no Kevin. Continuing to save the council money, they had no tab to settle at the bar, and Ayka had sent Kevin home because she knew he had to pick up Lucy (his golden retriever) from a boarding kennel.

“So, I guess we’re going to Josling,” said Ayka. Ana couldn’t find the bear attack online. They had to go look at library records of local publications. Ayka would whisper to a librarian had she known any there, but as Liam had said, it was a ‘small ass town’— if they had a library, they didn’t have a website that listed the names of and photos of people who worked there.

“Should we get a room?” asked Kostya. “And leave tomorrow? Because a library would be closed by now anyway.” Whenever Ayka heard him say something, he seemed to be having the worst ideas ever—perhaps it was best that he kept quiet.

“Ah, fuck it,” Drake said. “Bear attack, Christmas day but at night, about thirty years ago? Got it.” Drake took off. Not with fire—Ayka still hadn’t seen him do that. She only heard it from Shen and thought it was awesome. Her brother had taken off with a telekinetic Push as he always did.

It was more discreet, Ayka supposed, until someone yelled, “What the fuck?”

Turning, she saw a group of men by the bar entrance alternating looking at them and the sky. One of them pulled out his phone and took a picture of Ayka with a flash—the light made her flinch.

“Kostya?” Ayka only asked and not yelled at the light bender standing leisurely with his idle hands stuffed into pockets. He was looking up at the sky like a tourist.

“Yes, Ayka?”

Why not do the only thing you’re good for? Why not perform the single simple duty you’re tasked with? Had it been anyone else but you, Kostya, the three drunk idiots over there wouldn’t have seen my brother take off. You’re going to tell me that Drake didn’t warn you, and that I didn’t tell you, but why should we? Why should we have to tell a light bender to bend light?

Crawford had been a coward who hedged his bets constantly, sure, but Ayka remembered him being able to cloak and project simultaneously. A warship approached the shore invisible, and the water underneath appeared undisturbed as she sailed.

Collette, another light bender, could cloak through. She could make the body appear invisible to its own eyes, fucking with the minds of the enemy. A slew of men had thought they’d died and had become ghosts without bodies, it was a prank Sasuke and Collette played on Constantine’s men.

Less useful during peace perhaps, but the House of Mirrors was a vital unit of the Elder command.
