It’s our last year of school. I’m finally eighteen, and I’ve moved out of Cherry Hill. Put my savings to good use and rented a small studio apartment on East Biddle Street. It’s a comfortable little matchbox and my rent is paid up for the next six months, which gives me enough time to figure out what I’ll do with my life.

My dad drank my college fund by the time I was fifteen, so Law School is out of the question for now. I don’t have enough on my college application forms to warrant a scholarship. My chances are slim. But I can build up a decent credit over the next year or two, then apply for a student loan. I can save up in the meantime, so the debt doesn’t come back to bite me in the ass.

Ethan and I are inseparable. He found me this place and spends most of his time here. Things aren’t great with his foster parents but as long as they cash the checks, the arrangement works. Once school is over, though, they’ll be screwed, because Ethan will become fully independent. I’ve already told him to come live with me - we can find something bigger later or he can rent his own place, if he wants to.

He says I need my space. That I need to enjoy my freedom. My mom calls me every day. She’s worried sick about me but I keep telling her she should’ve expressed those concerns when she was letting dad beat us up. Things aren’t good between them and I can’t help but feel sorry, but I’ve had enough already. And Ethan is right. It’s so good to not live in fear of getting your face punched in by the man who’s supposed to protect and nurture you.

Somehow, I still manage love them both, but our relationship is damaged beyond repair. Their toxicity will ruin me. Ethan saved me in more ways than one. I know that the masses will claim that love is something for the older folk, that it takes wisdom and age to really know what love is. I don’t agree. The beats of my heart, and the wholeness of it is credited to Ethan. On the darkest of days, he’s all the light that I need. If the way he causes my heart to beat faster and slower all at the same time isn’t love, then nothing is.

These are all the thoughts that run through my head and with school being cut short today, due to preparations for graduation prom, I have a hell of a long time to think. Ethan is out for the day. Jimmy has a job for him. He never tells me what the jobs are, per se, but he can afford to take me out to nice places on the weekend.

I get to my apartment, locking the door behind me. It’s still Baltimore, I’m not in the Hamptons yet. I slip out of my clothes and into the shower, welcoming the hot water over my skin.
