Chapter 11

“—Now, please recite the step-by-step process of filing a complaint for civil tribunal with the Kingdom of Arrogance and how it differs from the process throughout the remainder of the Underworld,” Evangeline said to me from across our usual table in the library.

It wasn’t a question. Over the past few weeks, I learned that the severe old woman rarely asked anyone anything. Rather, she demanded responses and didn’t allow room for negotiation.

I shifted in the stiff wooden chair and nodded. We’d been at it for a little over an hour, and I knew that I still had a while to go before I was set free for lunch in my private rooms. Despite that understanding, I was antsy. All I could think about was getting back to the music room that afternoon and seeing Asher again.

Truth be told, I’d been spending a lot of time thinking about Asher. Not just the time that I spent with him, nor merely about the piano lessons that I offered to give him, but about him.

Ever since my trip to the pits of Arrogance with Prince Finn yesterday, I hung on to thoughts of Asher for comfort. It was akin to recalling memories of a golden summer day. A warm breeze. The soothing sound of the rustling leaves of trees overhead. Dappled sunlight on my skin.

It was reckless to let myself think about him like that. I shouldn’t be seeking comfort or mental refuge in a servant. If I was stronger, I would straighten my spine, grit my teeth, and learn how to become better at taking on the role of Finn’s future wife. When I wasn’t busy thinking about Asher, I was punishing myself with internal arguments like that. I called myself weak, inadequate, and shameful.

If my father ever found out that I felt this way, he would probably smite me.

Well, not actually. He wasn’t exactly the smiting kind of god.

But if the god of the Underworld discovered that I was more enamored with the prince’s personal attendant than the prince himself, that wouldn’t bode well for me. My father was a minor god who was referred to by mortals and immortals alike by his name, Zoren. Finn’s father was a different story. No one dared to speak his real name aloud. In fact, it was so taboo that my sisters and I were never even taught what his true name was. We could only ever refer to him by his official title.

As such, it was risky to go against his wishes, but I couldn’t help it. Throughout twenty-one years of life, it was my one act of rebellion. It was difficult to feel bad about my fondness for Asher when it was the only thing that truly brought me comfort.

“Your Highness?” Evangeline snapped. “Do you know the answer or not? Being unfocused in the middle of a lesson is not very becoming of a young royal.”

I blinked, so lost in mental anguish that I forgot I was supposed to be replying to Evangeline.
