Launched on April 27, 1964, Corona Mission 1005 provided, as one wry NRO official put it, “valuable engineering data on non-optimum reentry survivability.” After a successful start to the flight, the KH-4A satellite started failing, prompting controllers to eject the film buckets over the Pacific in late May. It wasn’t until July 1964 that two Venezuelan farm workers would stumble upon the wreckage and report it to the Venezuelan government. (National Reconnaissance Office.)

The remains of the first KH-9 Hexagon (Mission 1201-3) reside at a depth of 16,400 feet under the Pacific Ocean. During aerial recovery, the parachute on RV No. 3 was destroyed, and the capsule sank on impact. The CIA and Navy planned an eight-month recovery effort, which was executed on April 26, 1972. At the time, it was the deepest underwater salvage attempt ever made. The attempt failed, as the film disintegrated when the recovery vehicle ascended from the ocean floor.
