Chapter Fourteen

Four Seasons Hotel – Boston, Massachusetts

"Damn it, Joey! I don't want you to go digging into my past. Leave it there." Van stood in front of me as I packed my luggage. He had been trying his hardest to talk me out of flying to Florida tonight.

After the interview, Jack, Cori, Van and myself went back to that small room. Jack and Cori said that we needed to do damage control and fast. As pissed as Jack was at Rachel, he said that she was right. It was all going to come out. I suggested that I go to Florida, find Candy and talk some sense into her. That included having her sign a non disclosure agreement. One that I needed to whip up on the flight.

I also suggested that I meet with Van's brother and sister. Cori said to include his mom in that conversation which just made me sick to my stomach. I didn't even want to meet the woman. Van blew up and said that this was his life and he didn't want anyone going anywhere to do anything regarding his murder conviction. It was beyond me. It was time for some tough love. While I thought I was about to do that, Cori spoke up. In a firm, but unflinching voice, Cori talked about how this could go so south for him so quickly. Not only in the eyes of the public, but in the eyes of the law. She looked over at me to confirm this fact.

I supported it. I told Van that he could be in major legal trouble if the court found out that he lied about his whereabouts that night, not to mention pleading guilty to a murder that he didn't commit. I said that while Rachel didn't spell it out, she strongly suggested that he was trying to protect someone. After Saturday, no one else would be as kind.

Van still wasn't completely convinced. But then Jack took control. Placing his big hand on Van's shoulder, he explained how he respected Van so much as a fighter and how he had taken control of his career prior to prison. He mentioned how shocked he was at the murder conviction and how disappointed he was when Van wouldn't even see him when he came to the prison over the last five years. I had no idea that Jack had been doing that. Wow. Yes, TFC stood to make a lot of money off of Van if his return was successful, but Jack took this very personally. He didn't want his trust in Van to be for nothing.

Van became silent and tried to walk around the room. Hard to do with three other people in there, one of which was just as big of a giant as Van.

"Fine. I understand what you guys are trying to do. I appreciate it, I really do. It's just that there are other people involved here. People that I love. I don't want them to be hurt."

"That's why we would be sending Joey to handle it.
