CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“You must’ve been mistaken,” Dracula insisted. “This situation isn’t connected to the Van Helsings.”

I shook my head. “Unless Doctor Feuerhahn and Doc Van Helsing share a similar likeness, I wasn’t mistaken.”

“He wasn’t a fully formed apparition,” Morty pointed out. “Translucent and a little blurry. I can see why it might be easy to mistake his identity.”

I rubbed my brow. “Maybe you’re right. Still, it looked like Abraham. Just like I remembered him from my time in the Scholomance.”

Morty stroked his chin. “More curious is how I sensed the energy while the activity was going on. When the energy dissipated, the poltergeists stopped and the apparition stopped. Something was emanating an energy like the one my father described. It may or may not be the same trinket that Feuerhahn was wearing before he died.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Delphine placed her hand on my back. “It appears that of the two options we considered, the trinket doesn’t silence spirits or put them in a slumber. If the trinket allowed someone to control the spirits, whoever was using the trinket could order them to leave at the same time he escaped the house with it.”

I sighed. “I still have this sinking feeling that the ghost of Abraham Van Helsing was involved. I don’t know why, or how.”

“I’m not disputing that you think you saw what you saw,” Dracula assured me. “Still, I cannot fathom why Abraham would be interested in this particular case. The spirits at the asylum and the doctor aren’t linked to anything related to the Van Helsings. I originally brought up the case for no other reason than to give us some experience dealing with specters before we might have to confront Van Helsing’s ghost.”

“You’re probably right,” I acknowledged. “Maybe I was just seeing what I wanted to see. Do we have any pictures of Doctor Feuerhahn?”

Dracula nodded. “In my files. I left them back at the schoolhouse. If you only saw him from behind, however, a suit from a bygone era would fit Feuerhahn as well as Abraham Van Helsing. Either way, we didn’t get the trinket. I have no idea where the person is who is supposed to live in this place. We still have two other houses. Perhaps if ‘G’ is off the table, ‘M’ or ‘D’ might be able to give us information if we present to them our solution. Give them new bodies if they can help us cast the doctor into a golem.”

I nodded. “I’ve programmed a few of those archeus crystals. We can sweeten the pot and add a few enhancements to the golems if necessary.”

We checked the other two houses. They were also vacant. We didn’t see any signs of a struggle at either of the other two houses. They were just empty. Were MGD gone before the spirits and poltergeists appeared? Where were they? The houses and rooms were furnished in a way that suggested that these men had families, including children. Everyone was gone. Morty double-checked the reaper schedules to make sure that no last-minute additions had been made.
