Julian Osgood Field (1852–1925) was a wealthy American writer and socialite who spent most of his life in London and the great cities of Europe, just like the protagonist in the following story. Field was arrogant and self-centered and loved to be the center of attention. He had few scruples, which is apparent from the titles of his memoirs, Things I Shouldn’t Tell (1924) and Uncensored Recollections (1924). He was imprisoned for forgery in 1901 and was an undischarged bankrupt. In 1911 he involved Lady Ida Sitwell in a case of fraud that led to both of them being imprisoned in 1915, he for eighteen months hard labor. I do not know how much this affected him but, like Oscar Wilde, he died as he had lived—way beyond his means. Some critics have called the following story overlong, and there is no doubt that Field wrote like he talked, loving the sound of his own voice, but the end result is a mini-novel full of period atmosphere that must be savored on the journey to the inevitable climax.
