REGIONAL VAMPIRE NOVELS

Authors:

Charlaine Harris, Chloe Neill, Inanna Arthen (These could all fall under Romance as well.)

NPR HAS A SUMMER SERIES called Crime in the City. Reporters interview authors of crime novels in which the place is as rich a part of the story as the characters. These regional novels—Southern, Chicago, New England—can all claim that kind of status. Anyone who has seen the rich, sultry, two-minute introduction to the HBO series True Blood, which can lay a claim to being the best TV introduction of any show I have ever seen, will understand what I am talking about.

The Southern Vampire Mysteries (also known as the Sookie Stackhouse Novels) by Charlaine Harris. Books in this series include Dead until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead, Dead to the World, Dead as a Doornail, Definitely Dead, All Together Dead, From Dead to Worse, Dead and Gone, Dead in the Family, Dead Reckoning, and Deadlocked. A Touch of Dead contains the complete Stackhouse short stories, and a short story volume, Many Bloody Returns, also has a Stackhouse story.

The HBO series True Blood is loosely based on the books. The novels take place in Northern Louisiana. Much of the action takes place in two bars, Merlottes and Fangtasia. In this alternate world of today, the Japanese have developed a synthetic form of blood and vampires can “come out” and be legal. Sookie Stackhouse is a mind-reading waitress with some fairy blood, who falls in love with Bill Compton, a vampire who was turned after the Civil War. Sookie cannot read the minds of vampires—which is relaxing, since it is pretty awful to always know what others are thinking. Another vampire, Eric Northman, has a huge role in the books and TV show and also becomes a love interest for Sookie. Later novels involve shapeshifters, werewolves, werepanthers, and fairies. There's lots of political intrigue between the various “supes,” or supernaturals, wars between vampire kingdoms and between the fairies, not to mention the complexities between townspeople, the police, the life in Merlotte's bar, and more. One book details the attempt of shapeshifters to come out just like the vampires; another deals with Sookie coming to know her own history and fae side. Some of the later books are not as well written, and the last book of the series, Dead Ever After, was hated by hundreds of citizen reviewers, mainly fans of the relationship between Sookie and Eric. But in the end it was inevitable that Sookie would end up not with a vampire but with a supernatural who can be with her in the sunshine she so loves. The HBO television show is a lot darker and more violent than the books.

The Chicagoland Vampires series, by Chloe Neill. This series includes Some Girls Bite, Friday Night Bites, Twice Bitten, Hard Bitten, Drink Deep, Biting Cold, House Rules, and Biting Bad. When I came across this series, I totally gobbled it up. The story is about Merit, a twenty-seven-year-old graduate student in medieval literature, living with her friend Mallory, who has a job at an advertising agency.
