Chapter 18

Caleb

The music on the radio plays softly in the background as Caleb heads toward Mercy City. He and Maddy take the trip back alone since Cora’s already at Veritas. Maddy is quiet and he glances at her. She peers out the window, smudges of ash on her jeans and bare arms. Loose tendrils of hair have worked out of her ponytail. Her hands rest in her lap and her fingers are clenched around the cure.

He doesn’t comment on the glass vial. He’s relieved they managed to get their hands on the cure and he hopes she’ll be able to find a way to alter the components. He allows himself the thought of perhaps becoming a human again, but he isn’t certain if that’s what he really wants. Perhaps, months ago, he would have killed at the chance to have his old life back. Now, however, he has responsibilities. He’s the vampire king and even if the council wish to use the title to attempt to pull his strings, he can’t simply abandon those who follow him. Not when he can change the way things are.

“Are you okay?” Caleb’s voice breaks the silence.

Maddy turns to look at him, raising her eyebrow. “Me? You’re the one who was about to be slaughtered by the cherufe. Maybe I should be asking you.”

“I’m fine.” Irritation flickers through Caleb, not at Maddy, but at himself. The cherufe had been much stronger than he’d realized and he’d nearly lost his life because of it. When he’d seen the terrible beast, he’d completely forgotten Alexandra possessed the only weapon that could be used to end its life.

“Thank God for that knife, right?” Maddy says. “And for Alexandra. She could have ridden back with us.”

Caleb gives Maddy a smile and reaches over to take her hand, resting their interlocked fingers on the console between them. “I don’t mind it just being us.”

“Me neither.” She gives his fingers a squeeze then looks back out the window as they enter Mercy City.

Caleb draws in a breath, tasting something akin to longing in Maddy’s scent. His hand tightens on the steering wheel as he turns a corner and onto the street that will take them to Veritas. Someday, he’ll make sure her life gets back to normal, and then they can be together. They finally reach Veritas and Caleb parks beside the curb. Maddy hops out and glances back. Reign and the witches are close behind.

Maddy starts up the steps. Caleb locks his car and quickly catches up. The large double doors groan as they enter, the rest of their company close behind. Nim comes around the corner and waves.

“Glad you all seem to be in one piece,” she says. “The others are in here.” She leads the group to one of the private rooms the expansive library has to offer.

Caleb and Maddy head inside after Nim. Cora is there, along with Quinn. The spirit looks less than thrilled at having been captured yet again. Glowing bands wrap around her middle and wrists, binding her to the chair with some sort of magical ropes.
