I’m to blame, Pete. There’s no way around it.” Charles looked out the window in Pete’s bedroom. There was nothing to see but the clapboard wall of the house next door, five feet away, fading in the twilight. But he couldn’t help wanting to watch for any sign of danger, for any sign of Victor.

“That’s bull!” Pete said. He stretched out on the mattress, his hands behind his head. “It’s not your fault. How could you know? I mean, how could you?”

Charles glanced at his brother, who was calmly gazing up at him. Pete wore a plaid shirt and blue jeans with a hole in the left knee. He seemed paler than usual, but otherwise he looked like his old self, the sparkle back in his dark eyes.

“Right,” Charles chuckled grimly. “How could I know that a vampire would do such a thing? Can you believe this, Pete? A vampire.”

They’d spent the past two evenings talking about Victor, with Pete trying to absorb Charles’s explanation of Victor’s history, of the Dark Kingdom, of Kyle’s nature. Charles had described the horrifying encounter in the mausoleum. Pete needed little convincing, not with the wounds on his throat and his own undeniable experience of Victor’s power. For two nights, Charles had slept on the floor on a blanket next to Pete’s bed to protect his brother, getting up often in the night to check on his parents. He left the house before they got up so he wouldn’t have to explain why he’d slept there.

Charles finally pulled himself away from the window. He was tired from two sleepless nights. He pulled the chair out from the desk, turned it toward Pete, and sat down.

“You can’t guard me forever, you know,” Pete said, turning his head toward his brother. “And what about Kyle? He’s all alone at your apartment. What if Victor does decide to hurt him?”

Kyle had been staying in the apartment since the encounter with Victor the other night. Where else could he go? “Victor won’t hurt him,” Charles said confidently.

“You mean because of his plans for the two of them?” Pete said.

Charles nodded. He’d told Pete about Victor’s efforts to persuade Kyle to join him as a predator of the night.

“But if Kyle keeps resisting, won’t Victor finally hurt him? Can’t he do that? Force him to become a vampire?”

“I told you, it has to be a free choice.” Charles rubbed his eyes. He knew he needed to sleep. He should stretch out on the floor right now. But he was too wired to rest.

Pete sat up in the bed, leaning back against the wall to face Charles. “You care a lot about him, don’t you?”

“Of course. You would, too, if you’d seen the two of them together. He’s under Victor’s thumb.” Charles realized he sounded defensive. The question had made him uncomfortable. He tried to reassure himself that Pete only meant that Charles was a good friend, but it didn’t help. His nerves were still taut.

“But they’re lovers. Maybe that’s why Victor has so much control.
