Dante
The building we were heading for was a skyscraper with several hundred floors. I might have been crazy, but when I saw the building, I thought there wasnât a better place to plummet to our deaths.
I sailed through the air, steering us as best as I could in the direction of the nearby tower. All the way up the face closest to us there were rows and rows of cloth balconies, some sort of sculptural piece to make the tower standout from the rest. From the top row to the bottom the cloth balconies shifted through all the colors of the rainbow. I had to admit it looked pretty neat.
âDante!â Jess screamed. âWeâre going to hit that building!â
âThatâs the plan!â I shouted back. âHold on!â
I braced for impact as we smashed through the first overhang. If we were really unlucky then we would bounce straight off and just plummet to our deaths anyway. Fortunately we tore right through and ripped through the one directly underneath it.
I couldnât help grunting as we plummeted through each new level, it was hard enough keeping hold of Jess and making sure she didnât fly out of my arms. There was no time to count how many levels of overhang there were when I was approaching, but there couldnât be more than twenty.
I half-hoped that by the fifth or sixth one weâd be slow enough to finally stop, but no, we tore through every single fucking one. When we ripped through the last one our speed had slowed considerably, but we were still going fast enough that hitting the ground would do some serious damage.
Fortunately for usâor I should say unfortunately perhapsâit just happened to be garbage day on this block in Varcosa.
As we ripped through the last cloth overhang twenty feet of freefall stood between us and the ground below. We smashed into an open garbage dumpster; our fall cushioned by heaps of rubbish bags. The thing stank, but god almighty I was grateful for the soft landing, Jess definitely wouldnât have come out of that without broken bones otherwise.
âOh my godâ¦â Jess groaned as she pushed herself out of my grasp and pulled herself out of the dumpster. âSeriously?!â
I chuckled and pulled myself out too, dusting myself off and looking up at the rows and rows of wrecked cloth canopies that had helped slow our descent. âWell, itâs not the best place to land, but itâs better than ending up as bone soup on the pavement.â
Jess also looked up at the torn canopies, realizing just how far we had fallen. She seemed to grasp that we wouldnât be alive if it wasnât for this stroke of âunfortunateâ luck.
âBeggars canât be choosers I guess, still⦠I am in serious need of a shower.â
âWell that makes two of us,â I said. Looking back toward the street I saw the regular hustle and bustle of Varcosa. The sidewalks were packed with people and hovercars flew along both sides of the street. Here in the alleyway we
