Chapter 13 : New Beginnings, Tough Decisions, And Did I Mention I Have A Lot Of Work?

“Who told you to move?” I heard a drill instructor bellow from across the parade field. “You have three proper responses, blink, breathe, and respond, do you understand me!”

I had to hide a bit of a smile as I heard that, though I am sure our recruits were not quite so amused at the moment.

The shuttles had dropped them off and our drill instructors had got them into formations and were moving them through their first day. Off on the other side of the facility, our cadets were arriving, coming off the shuttle pads. We didn’t want either group being around the other for their training. They were treated differently because they were at radically different stages in their training and we wanted different end results for officers and enlisted.

In some ways, our enlisted training was going to be far harder to properly complete. What had been a six-month basic training process on Century, backed by another four months of job specific training was compressed down into just four months in total.

During those four months we had to break them out of whatever bad habits they might have, bring them to a basic military standard, train them on how to follow orders, fight, and survive, and then get them to a basic level of familiarity with their future assignments.

These recruits would get more on-the-job training at whatever ship, squadron, or section they joined. The part that frightened me was that the Centurions had only ever numbered around ten thousand personnel. Between the new recruits and our cadet class, we were adding almost fifty percent to that. Which meant almost a third of our personnel would be new and trained to a lower standard than any time in decades.

The first class of officers were more complicated, but I felt a little less anxious about them for the fact that they, at least, were the product of months or years at the Century Military Academy, so they had more training time.

All of those cadets were the ones that had evacuated from Century with me. The second and first-class, the juniors and seniors, had been commissioned. That left third and fourth classmen, who we had formed together as a single class of five hundred personnel. Normal graduating class sizes back on Century had been around eight hundred. Typically, only a third of those who entered as plebes would graduate on time, with another third graduating a year later, and one third never graduating at all.

Our officer class would have eighteen months to complete their training. Most of that was time required to complete certifications for ship and fighter handling, as third and fourth year cadets hadn’t had the opportunity to begin that training.
