Chapter Seven
Even though Abby’s first experience with the tribe wasn’t the most welcoming, she hoped that maybe with this holiday, the villagers would be in better spirits and would be more accepting of her. She didn’t know why this was so important to her, but it was.
The sight before her was something to behold. All the glorious colors that spread throughout their jungle were now covered on the bodies of the males in the tribe. The men wore fanciful headdresses, made from the fuchsia wheat-like plants. The males displayed them proudly. If she could compare it to an occasion on Earth, it would have to be Rio De Janeiro’s Carnival, with the ornate costumes, dancing, and stunning colors. By the looks of things, it would suggest that the men were dancing for the women of the tribe in a circle. They were all beckoning the women to join them. It was a fun dance, with the men twisting and turning together and using their hands to entice the women up.
All the young women were sitting outside of the dancing circle. And, sure enough, one woman popped up and chose her dance partner. He moved outside of the circle with his companion. There was a separate dance area for couples, where it turned into something reminiscent of Dirty Dancing. Abby’s face flushed as she watched the young couple dance and sway to the music. She felt she wouldn’t be able to dance that daring, or even that well, but maybe you had to have the right partner. The women were dressed in more neutral-colored flowing skirts with simple bands wrapped around their breasts. It was obvious that the men dressed to impress and the women had their pick of which partner they wanted. Abby couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
“I will be right back,” Krernkom mumbled against her neck, and turned away before she could say anything. Through the crowd she searched for Niffa. After a moment, she spotted her in the back with the older members of the tribe. She decided to head over and say hello.
“Aye, Ayebee!” Niffa waved her over when she spotted Abby approaching.
“Aye, Niffa!” Abby was just as excited to see her. She was glad to have a friend here, beside Krernkom. She plopped down next to her. “Why are you not dancing?” She wasn’t sure if it was for only certain people of the tribe or if everyone could join in.
“I’m mated. This dance is for the unmated younglings. I’m an old maid. My mate is Groshar.” Niffa pointed to an older man across the way, sandwiched between two other older men. He was smiling, with laughter lines and happy crow’s feet flanking each eye. Groshar must’ve felt eyes on him because suddenly his stare met with Niffa’s. He raised his fist to his chest and bowed his head at her while she smiled back. It was a sweet exchange.
“Here, try this. It’s Jeje. It will lift your spirits.” Niffa handed over a clay cup filled with dark liquid.
