Shiro Axilon, son of the black king, clenched his teeth in anguish as he made his way through the knee-deep snow. Hours had passed since the wielder had lost his little duel outside Haven, but the pain from the encounter still echoed through his soul.

Sure, his head still rang from the massive blow he’d suffered from that wretched tail, and the phantom pain in his arm still haunted him. But no, the true pain he suffered was the pain of defeat.

How? How could the son of the black king have fallen so far?! Not only had he been maimed, but he’d lost his respect to a damn commoner from some bottom-feeder realm...

When Shiro thought back to the way the last few months of his life had gone, he found it hard to imagine the gods themselves didn’t have it out for him. Back on the realm of Gust, he and his brothers had been bred for a life of war. The strongest of them was to receive the honor of entering the tower and fighting on behalf of their father. The next in line was destined to rule as the acting prince, over-seeing their family’s conquest of the surrounding territories.

Shiro’s eldest brother was the strongest of the pair, and as such was chosen to enter the tower and fight for ascension. That had been fine with Shiro. He’d found love with a young woman named violet, a noble from the allied Silver Sparrows Clan. He was more than content with fighting his father’s battles and exploring his love with the beautiful woman with purple hair.

Then tragedy rained down on him like a mighty hail of arrows. First, his brother was slain in an attempted assassination of his father, killed by an enchanted arrow that wasn’t meant for him. Then his future was shattered, for the arrow that killed his brother carried the sigil of the silver sparrow.

Shiro was certain that Violet’s clan had nothing to do with the assassination attempt. He knew it with every fiber of his soul. And yet, there was little that he could do to curb the black King’s rage.

Shiro’s father ordered him into the tower, but the man refused. He knew the depths of his father’s rage, and he wouldn’t turn a blind eye as Violet and her clan were massacred while he fought for ascension. And so, on that faithful day, Shiro cut a deal with the black king. He would enter the tower and fight for the coveted prize that lied at its peak, and in return, his father would spare Violet’s life.

For many nights the decision broke him. He lost his brother, his love, and potentially his life once he entered Helion’s blasted tower. But Shiro was a man of resolve... a man molded by years of combat training and tutelage from his clan’s greatest warmasters. He resolved to not only enter the tower, but to conquer it! He’d reach the top, and with his wish, he’d create a place that they could be together, away from the cruelty that the realm of gust seemed to reap.
