The additional phase of Seeking Proposals provokes people to extend their thinking and push past the familiar.

2. Building

Definition: Extending or developing a proposal which has been made by another person.

Building does what it says – it builds on an existing proposal. It’s a highly effective behaviour, and a rare one, since it demands you listen to other people’s contributions, resisting the temptation to be consumed by your own ideas. It also requires you to be agile at processing all the ideas that are being generated. The great news is that, like all behaviour, Building can be learned. It’s simply a matter of practice and feedback.

Building is strongly correlated with skilled performers (Rackham and Morgan). The impact of Building is that others feel listened to and the climate in the session is perceived as positive. Neurologically Building causes a dopamine hit: “People like my idea”. Building also creates momentum. When you’re in an ideas-generating session and it feels like you’re really motoring, it’s often because someone or some people are using Building behaviour.

If we go back to generating ideas for the office Christmas party, we can take one of the Content Proposals:

“Let’s have a children’s tea party and invite families…”
