What do we really want?

All of these issues of practical change come together in a new initiative around the profound question at the heart of the new politics of the Anthropocene: what do we really want?

For organizations, especially in crisis or at a formative stage, I’ve found that this can be an immensely useful question for people to ask themselves. The answers are likely to be diverse but illuminating and the discussions animated and often heated. In fact, ‘what do we really want?’ is just about the most emotionally charged question we can ask of ourselves and others. Existential psychiatrist Irvin Yalom (1989:3) writes of the explosive effect it can have on a large group, as people pair up and ask each other the question repeatedly:

Could anything be simpler? One innocent question and its answer. And yet time and time again, I have seen the group evoke unexpectedly powerful feelings. Often, within minutes the room rocks with emotion.
