Just before 0800 hrs on 7 December 1941, Japanese carrier-based aircraft mounted a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite the tense political situation at the time, as well as the demonstrated potential of air attacks in various fleet exercises, the defences at Pearl Harbor were literally caught with their pants down! This dramatic image was taken from one of the Japanese aircraft shortly after the attack commenced and in the water can be seen the tracks of the two torpedoes that hit the battleship USS West Virginia (BB-48), together with the outward ripples of the resulting explosions. In the background, smoke rises from Hickam Field, which was also under attack.
